Social Media and Fake news
In our social media marketing class Josh and Jeremiah gave an excellent presentation about laws surrounding fake news and the dissemination of it on social media.
There are already countries with laws pertaining to this, which are punishable by a fine. It brings up great questions about censorship, and how we can fix this problem before the government gets involved. Many people worry this may infringe on Americans first amendent right to freedom of speech.
In recent weeks Elon Musk has been fined by the SEC for "joking" on his twitter that he was going to make Tesla a private company. Is this the right course of action for the SEC to make? Sure, it was a very dumb decision on Elon's part but is this not covered under the first amendent.
It's scary to think of a world where the government tells you what kind of things are against the law to say/post etc. Who decides those kinds of thing?
It's important to keep this in mind in social media marketing since a lot of this "fake news" circulates on social media platforms. Essentially be ethical and don't post false news, make sure to fact check.
